Celtic Institute and Suzuki Institute Class Information
Celtic Institute
Celtic Institute students should choose 5 or 6 classes from the Celtic class list. They may also choose any of the violin or vocal classes. There are 6 class slots during the day. Students who wish to take less than 5 classes may pay on an individual class basis, although Institute students will receive priority registration up to May 15.
Suzuki Institute
Students will be assigned to a group class based on their polished piece (these classes will meet 2 times per day), private lessons, and may pick 3 elective classes from ANY of the class offerings, including the Celtic classes. There are only 6 class slots in the day, so please choose accordingly. Arts and crafts will be offered at no charge.
Children younger than 9 will be ushered from class to class by a camp mentor.

Celtic Classes
Irish Fiddle
Instructors: Mary Taylor – beginning; Liz Carroll – intermediate/advanced
This class will be divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced. The beginning will focus on learning basic tunes. Intermediate/Advanced Irish Fiddle will focus on style, technique, bowing and ornamentation. Students for the intermediate/advanced classes should have experience not only in playing, but also in Irish music.
Beginning and Intermediate Scottish Fiddle
Instructor: Rosie Newton
Students will learn tunes and styles of Scottish fiddling. Classes grouped by ability.
Bodhran (Irish Drum)
Instructor: Danny Mallon
Beginning Bodhran class is designed for anyone who would like to learn or reinforce the basics of playing this drum. Topics such as: choosing the right drum to buy, stick technique/ basic strokes, positioning of the drum, basic traditional rhythms, tuning, care and maintenance are all covered.
Intermediate to advanced bodhran techniques is designed for the player who is interested in strengthening and advancing their skills and rhythm on the drum and learning modern styles and techniques. Topics such as: alternate stickings, stick choices, odd time beats, pop style beats, top end, Kerry style, muffling, pitch bending, scales, and bass lines are included.
General Percussion Class
Instructor: Danny Mallon
No instrument needed. Students will learn a series of activities that will help them to internalize rhythm. Age 9 and up.
Penny Whistle (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced)
Instructor: Susan Conant
Beginning students need no experience. Whistles in D can be purchased at the festival. Tunes as well as ornaments and style will be studied in this class. Classes grouped according to ability.
Recorder
Instructor: Susan Conant
This class will be divided by playing level. Students with no experience will enjoy learning this versatile instrument and more advanced players will focus on scales, tunes, and ornamentation. This class will be perfect for students who have done a little study in school.
Improvisation with Ferintosh
Instructors: Abby Newton, Kim Robertson
This class is open to all instruments and will be taught by the members of Ferintosh. Explore the ways to arrange tunes and how to make the most of performing Celtic music as an ensemble.
Irish Guitar
Instructor: John Doyle
Do not miss this chance to study style, chords, right and left hand technique with the most famous Irish guitarist in the world. Learn the best way to accompany Irish music as well as play melodies yourself.
Celtic Harp
Instructor: Kim Robertson
Taught by world-renowned harpist, Kim Robertson. Students must have their own harp and must have some knowledge and expertise in playing the instrument. Style, tunes and ornamentation as it relates to Scottish music will be studied.
Folk Cello
Instructor: Abby Newton
This class will be taught by Abby Newton, a pioneer in using the cello as a “fiddle”. Students must have their own cello and be at an intermediate level as a player. Abby will explore the world of Scottish music and teach you how to make the most of your instrument playing these wonderful tunes.
O'Carolan Class
Instructor: Abby Newton and Kim Robertson
This class is open to all instruments, for players at an intermediate level. The music of O’Carolan, a prolific folk/baroque composer will be studied. Sheet music will be provided.
Scottish Dance
Instructor: Rosie Newton
This class will be taught by Sabre McGillivray, who comes from Nova Scotia. The class welcomes beginners as well as students with previous experience. It is recommended that students take both dance classes to learn the differences in the Irish and Scottish dance form.
Vocal Classes
Children’s Choir
Instructor: Aprill Raines
This is a great elective for all of the festival participants. Everyone will enjoy singing, chanting, clapping, and moving to an array of folk and classical choral arrangements. Choral experience not required.
Voice Masterclass
Instructor: Robert Taylor
This will be a 20 minute vocal lesson taught in a group setting once during the week of the festival. High school and college age students are welcome and must have a selection prepared to sing. All participants will be encouraged to stay for the entire masterclass to learn from the critiques offered to other participants.
Folk Song Class
Instructor: John Doyle
John will share original and past Irish songs. History and singing included!!
Suzuki Elective Classes (For Suzuki Institute students only)
Beginning and Intermediate Music Reading
Instructor: Mary Taylor, Tiffany Rice
This class will be divided by level and will focus on sightreading and music theory. Fun activities will be incorporated to help students improve their reading skills.
Violin Classes
Private Violin Lessons
Instructor: Mary Taylor, Tiffany Rice
Lessons will be taught in 15 minute segments with 3 students in a class. Students will observe each other in the lesson as a learning experience. Lessons will be each day of the week.
Arts and Crafts Class
Open to any Suzuki or Celtic Institute student at no charge. The arts and crafts room will be open from 10-4 and will have a different project offered each hour. A great diversion during a busy day of classes. Take advantage of arts and crafts during the hour long lunch time.
