Mary Ott

Mary Ott

With “a voice that could blow the roof off any theatre she graces” (Broadway World), Mary Ott is a crossover artist in the Charleston music scene. Mary is widely recognized for her quirky southern charm and her “emotionally infused singing'' (Talkin’ Broadway). Originally from Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Mary has performed across the country. Previously, she completed her Master of Music degree (Musical Theatre & Opera Performance) at Arizona State University and her Bachelor of Music degree (Vocal Performance) at the College of Charleston. Over the years, Mary has delighted audiences in the roles of Emma Jones (Street Scene), Margaret Johnson (The Light in the Piazza), Jo March (Little Women), and Lucille Frank (Parade). Mary recently made her debut at the iconic 54 Below in NYC. Mary’s love for singing was fostered by the many choirs she sang in growing up, and so Mary remains active in the choral world, performing regularly with the Taylor Festival Choir. Outside of music and theatre, Mary loves learning, gaming, and caring for animals of all shapes and sizes.

Do you have a favorite TFC or “singing with Rob” anecdote?

Every year at the annual Madrigal Dinners at the College, we sang the "Boar's Head Carol" to announce dinner being served and Rob was always the one to start by singing the a capella solo. Right before this was the "Wassail", at the end of which Rob would chug a very large tankard of spiked wassail. One night the wassail must have been exceptionally strong because Rob goes to start the "Boar's Head" and he decides to sing the solo a minor 3rd up from the original key, making the tenors sing high C's on what is normally a very easy little refrain. I only wish I could have been sitting in the audience to see how flabbergasted and honestly scared we looked at that moment.
