Reaching for the Light

“Reaching for the Light” is a wonderful metaphor representing the resilient striving of the human spirit when faced with the sort of major adversity that too often dominates the world we inhabit. This concert celebrates such striving with four choral works, each focused on “reaching for the light” in different contexts.
In celebration of the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, TFC performs His Light Still Shines by the great American composer Moses Hogan. Everyday Wonders: The Girl from Aleppo by Cecilia MacDowell tells the extraordinary story of Nujeen Mustafa, a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy forced by war to flee her home and embark on an arduous journey to Europe with her sister. Nolemtiba (Destiny): A Symphony for Choir by Pēteris Plakidis—the work whose metaphorical use of an acorn growing into an oak tree inspired the name of this concert—shines a light on the triumphant struggle of the Baltic nations as they gained freedom from the Soviet Union. Considering Matthew Shepard is a choral cantata by Craig Hella Johnson, which tells the moving story of the young gay student in Wyoming whose tragic murder galvanized the world in deepening rights for the LGBTQ community.

After a one-year hiatus, we are thrilled to bring back our beloved Holiday musical offering: our Celtic and Classical Christmas, featuring our ensembles the TFC, Na Fidleiri Re-Imagined, and internationally renowned Celtic instrumentalists Kim Robertson (harp) and Joey Abarta (pipes). In addition to the Celtic and Classical concert, the Taylor Music Group will provide post-concert refreshments, then feature the TFC in a candle lit presentation of a Christmas Mass by the Tudor England compositional master Thomas Tallis. Patrons can attend one, or both concerts in the same evening!! So plan to listen to your favorite carols, holiday inspired jigs and reels, sip some wassail, and then close the evening with deeply reverent Renaissance Christmas polyphony!

The Taylor Music Group proudly opens its 20th anniversary season with a concert celebrating the role of the music in the healing of mind, body, and spirit--a focus especially important given our world’s current, highly stressful environment. The concert will feature the Taylor Festival Choir, and introduce Na Fidleiri Re-Imagined, led by fiddler Mary Taylor. Repertoire will include well-known British composer Will Todd’s choral cycle Among Angels, Taylor Festival Choir Composer-in-Residence Brian Galante’s On Meditation, Meditation from Thaïs by Massenet, and an exciting choral arrangement of Dolly Parton’s Light of a Clear Blue Morning. The concert will be preceded by a panel discussion beginning at 3pm, featuring leading physicians, clergy and artists considering the role of beautiful music in healing the human body, mind and spirit.
